
Captain Matt Maples was raised in Fair Oaks, California, and is a 1997 graduate of Bella Vista High School. Following high school, he attended both Sierra College and American River College.
In 2001, Captain Maples enrolled in the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Academy and graduated in 2002, beginning his career in law enforcement shortly thereafter. He first served as a Reserve Police Officer with the Wheatland Police Department in 2004. He went on to work full-time as a Police Officer with the City of Colusa, and later with the City of Wheatland.
In September 2009, Captain Maples joined the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. During his time in patrol, he also served in several specialized roles, including Search and Recovery Diver, Resident Deputy, and member of the Rural Crimes Taskforce. In 2011, he was assigned to the Detective Unit, where he investigated major felony crimes and handled coroner’s investigations. By 2014, he was assigned to a Federal Narcotics and Economic Crimes Task Force in Sacramento, where he worked on high-level federal cases involving drug trafficking, drug manufacturing, fraud, and other financial crimes.
Captain Maples was promoted to Sergeant in 2016 and returned to patrol duties. In July 2018, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the Detective Unit, where he also served as the Chief Deputy Coroner for Sutter County. In 2020, he assumed responsibility for the Training Section, managing agency compliance with California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC). He also oversaw the agency’s Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW) Program and conducted applicant interviews. Additionally, he managed recruitment and background investigations for all Sheriff’s Office personnel.
In July 2022, Captain Maples was assigned to the Operations Section, where he managed the Sheriff’s Office patrol operations. In this role, he supervised numerous programs and teams, including the Search and Recovery Dive Team, Sutter County Search and Rescue, Field Training Program, License Plate Recognition (LPR) Program, Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Program, and served as the FBI Terrorism Liaison Officer and California Law Enforcement Emergency Mutual Aid Coordinator. He also coordinated the Citizen Volunteer Program and served as liaison to both the Sutter County Sheriff’s Posse and the Yuba/Sutter Aero Squadron.
In September 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Division Commander and assigned as the Jail Commander of the Sutter County Jail.
Captain Maples lives in Fair Oaks, California, with his daughter Jasmyn. In his personal time, he enjoys cooking and spending quality time with his family and his girlfriend, Nikki.
