A message from Sheriff Barnes:
The concept of Community Policing dates to the 1800's and is a proven, effective, means of providing services to those we are sworn to protect. Today's law enforcement officer is faced with complex challenges ranging from public safety, abatelement issues, addressing homelessness and mental health issues in our communities. The Sutter County Sheriff's Office strives to provide the best possible services, all while being sensitive to the needs of those we serve. Our philosophy is one of pro-active enforcement coupled with compassionate customer service.
The Sheriff's Office has taken a unique approach to community policing with the development of our Community Response Team. This team consists of a supervisor, a deputy sheriff, and two community service officers dedicated to addressing the needs of our communities. Some of the duties they perform include directed patrols, homelessness liaison, water safety, Neighborhood Watch programs, and special events.
Some of the events the Sheriff's Office hosts for our communities include:
- National Night Out
- Shoot with the Sheriff
- Coffee events
- Dine with a Deputy
- Slice (pizza) with the Sheriff
- Shop with a Cop
- Trunk or Treat
We firmly believe partnerships are essential for creating and maintaining a community we can all be proud to call our home.
"The key to preventing crime is earning public support. Every community member must share the responsibility of preventing crime, as if they were a volunteer member of the force. They will only accept this responsibility if the community supports and trusts the police."
- Sir Robert Peel, father of modern law enforcement, 1829
